Biography of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee

Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (1901-1953) was an Indian politician and barrister who played a key role in the Indian independence movement. He was born on 6th July 1901 in Kolkata (then Calcutta) in West Bengal.

Mukherjee was a brilliant student and earned a degree in English and history from the University of Calcutta. He later went to England to study law and earned a degree from the University of London. After returning to India, he became a professor of law at the University of Calcutta and went on to serve as Vice-Chancellor of the university.

In 1940, Mukherjee joined the Indian National Congress and became a member of the Bengal Legislative Council. However, he soon became disillusioned with the Congress Party’s policies and joined the Hindu Mahasabha, a right-wing Hindu nationalist party.

After the partition of India in 1947, Mukherjee became a vocal opponent of the Indian National Congress’s policies towards the newly formed state of Pakistan. He founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, a political party that advocated for the interests of the Hindu community and sought to promote India’s cultural and national identity.

Mukherjee died on June 23, 1953, under mysterious circumstances while in detention in Jammu and Kashmir. His death remains a controversial topic, and some believe that he was murdered. However, his contributions to Indian politics and his advocacy for Hindu rights and national unity continue to be remembered and celebrated by many.
