Biography of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was an Indian philosopher, scholar, and statesman who served as the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and the second President of India (1962–1967). He was born on September 5, 1888, in a small town in Andhra Pradesh, India.

Radhakrishnan’s father was a farmer and his mother was a devout Hindu. Radhakrishnan studied philosophy at the University of Madras and later at the University of Calcutta, where he earned his PhD. He went on to become a professor of philosophy at several universities, including the University of Mysore, the University of Calcutta, and the University of Oxford.

Radhakrishnan was one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century and wrote extensively on Indian philosophy and religion. He was particularly interested in the Vedanta school of philosophy and wrote several books on the subject, including “The Philosophy of the Upanishads” and “Indian Philosophy.”

In addition to his academic work, Radhakrishnan was involved in Indian politics and served as the Indian ambassador to the Soviet Union and later as the Vice President and President of India. He was a strong advocate for Indian independence and worked to promote peace and understanding between India and other countries.

Radhakrishnan was a respected public figure and received numerous honors and awards, including the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, and the British Order of Merit. He died on April 17, 1975, in Chennai, India, but his legacy as a philosopher, statesman, and advocate for peace and understanding lives on.
