Biography of Jyoti Basu

Jyoti Basu was an Indian politician and statesman who served as the Chief Minister of the Indian state of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000. He was born on July 8, 1914, in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, and died on January 17, 2010, at the age of 95.

Basu was the son of Nishikanta Basu, a well-known lawyer and freedom fighter. He completed his education at St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata and the London School of Economics. He joined the Communist Party of India (CPI) in 1940 and became one of its prominent leaders in West Bengal.

Basu was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1946 and served as a member of the assembly for several years. He was first appointed Chief Minister of West Bengal in 1977, and he held that position for a record-breaking 23 years, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister in the history of India.

During his long tenure as Chief Minister, Basu played a significant role in the development of West Bengal, particularly in the areas of agriculture, industry, and education. He was a strong advocate of land reforms and worked to implement them in the state. He also promoted the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises, which helped to create employment opportunities for many people.

Basu was known for his pragmatic and moderate approach to politics, which helped to make him a respected figure across the political spectrum. He was a strong believer in secularism and played an active role in promoting communal harmony in the state.

In 1996, Basu was proposed as a candidate for the position of Prime Minister of India, but he declined the offer, citing his age and health as reasons for not accepting the position.

Jyoti Basu passed away on January 17, 2010, at the age of 95, after suffering from pneumonia and other health issues. His death was mourned by people across India, and he was remembered as one of the most influential political leaders of his time.
