Biography of Subhash Chandra Bose

Subhash Chandra Bose, also known as Netaji, was an Indian nationalist leader who fought for India’s independence from British rule. He was born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, in what is now the Indian state of Odisha.

Bose was educated in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and later studied at the University of Calcutta. He joined the Indian National Congress in 1921 and became involved in the Indian independence movement.

In the early 1930s, Bose was elected as the mayor of Calcutta, and he was later elected as the president of the Indian National Congress in 1938. However, his differences with the Congress leadership, especially with Mahatma Gandhi, led him to resign from the party in 1939.

During World War II, Bose sought the help of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan to form an army to fight against the British in India. He traveled to Germany in 1941 and met with Nazi leaders, including Adolf Hitler, seeking their support for India’s independence. He also established the Indian National Army (INA) in 1942, which was composed of Indian prisoners of war and Indian expatriates in Southeast Asia.

The INA fought against the British in Burma and India, and its soldiers were known as the “Azad Hind Fauj” (Free Indian Army). Bose gave famous speeches calling for the liberation of India and formed a provisional government in exile called the “Azad Hind Government.”

However, Bose’s efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and he died in a plane crash in August 1945, under mysterious circumstances. Bose remains a controversial figure in Indian history, with some hailing him as a hero and others criticizing his alliances with totalitarian regimes.

Despite his controversial legacy, Bose is remembered for his dedication to India’s independence and his efforts to build a united front against British rule. He continues to inspire Indian nationalists and freedom fighters to this day.
