Biography of Rishi Aurobindo

Sri Aurobindo Ghose, popularly known as Sri Aurobindo, was an Indian philosopher, yogi, poet, and nationalist. He was born on August 15, 1872, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, and died on December 5, 1950, in Pondicherry, India.

Aurobindo was educated at Cambridge University, where he studied classics and philosophy. After returning to India, he became involved in the Indian nationalist movement, joining the Indian National Congress and leading the movement for Indian independence from British colonial rule. He was a vocal advocate of the use of non-violent resistance as a means of achieving independence.

In 1910, Aurobindo withdrew from politics and retreated to Pondicherry, where he spent the rest of his life in spiritual pursuits. He developed a philosophy known as Integral Yoga, which combines traditional Indian yoga practices with Western psychology and philosophy. He also wrote extensively on spiritual and philosophical topics, including his famous work, The Life Divine.

Aurobindo believed that humanity was in the process of evolving to a higher level of consciousness and that the individual could play a crucial role in this process. He taught that the goal of life was to realize one’s true spiritual nature and to transcend the limitations of the ego.

Today, Aurobindo is widely regarded as one of India’s greatest philosophers and spiritual leaders. His teachings have influenced many people in India and around the world, and his philosophy continues to be studied and practiced by thousands of people. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, which he founded in 1926, remains a center for spiritual and intellectual pursuits.
