Biography of Sukanta Bhattacharya

Sukanta Bhattacharya (1926-1947) was a Bengali poet and writer who is regarded as one of the most important literary figures of the 20th century in Bengal. He was born on August 15, 1926, in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Sukanta Bhattacharya’s father, Nibaran Chandra Bhattacharya, was also a renowned poet and writer. Sukanta was deeply influenced by his father’s literary works and began writing poetry at a young age. He was also active in the Indian independence movement and joined the Communist Party of India in his youth.

Sukanta Bhattacharya’s poems were known for their boldness, social consciousness, and unique style. He wrote about the struggles of the working class, the oppression of the poor, and the fight for freedom and justice. Some of his most famous works include “Giti Guccha,” “Abhijan,” and “Balika Badhu.”

Unfortunately, Sukanta Bhattacharya’s life was cut short when he passed away at the young age of 21 due to tuberculosis. However, his literary legacy continued to live on, and his poetry remains popular among Bengali readers today.
